Boots pharmacies in Bexley can, for the first time, test people to assess the likelihood of them developing type 2 diabetes.
To mark the launch of the service, lollipop ladies from Bexley schools were given free tests. Among them was Cathy Rochester who works at Eastcote Primary School in Eastcote Road, Welling.
Risk factors for the disease include being overweight, having high blood pressure, being older than 40 and having a family history of the disease.
Cathy said: “I was grateful to be offered the opportunity to take the diabetes risk assessment.
“Apparently, I am at moderate risk of developing diabetes, which I was not previously aware of – I will certainly be using some of the tips and suggestions that the pharmacist recommended to help me reduce my risk.”
Boots now offers day-to-day advice on diabetes and how to manage the disease if you have it.
People who take the assessment answer seven questions, relating to age, gender and waist size among others, to gauge their risk.
There are three Boots stores in Bexley – in Bexleyheath Broadway, Tower Retail Park in Crayford and Welling High Street.
