Borough is first in country to achieve full coverage in two wards

Bexley has become the first borough in the country to achieve full Neighbourhood Watch coverage in two of its wards.

East Wickham has become the second ward to achieve full coverage, following St Michael’s in February.

Some 10,000 homes across the two wards are now covered by Neighbourhood Watch – which Bexley’s borough commander, Jeff Boothe, said he would encourage everyone to sign up to.

Sergeant Bryan Young, head of the Met Police’s safer neighbourhood teams for East Wickham and St Michael’s, said: “I am immensely proud of my teams and the way we police our community.

“Reported crime has dropped in East Wickham and I firmly believe that this is down to our work around Neighbourhood Watch and people’s increased vigilance, combined with the deterrent of Neighbourhood Watch signs.”

Inspector Paul Sanders added: “I am incredibly grateful to the people of East Wickham and St Michael’s wards who are giving their time to help the police, and I wish to thank them all. This is a great achievement.

“I am very conscious of the busy lives many people have, but I know that time given to Neighbourhood Watch is time well invested.”
