Bexley business awards launch promises opportunities for local businesses

The Bexley Business Excellence Awards launched last night, with chances for local companies to enter themselves for one of the prestigious categories.
he Bexley Business Excellence Awards launched on Thursday night, with a chance for the borough’s companies to enter themselves for one of the prestigious categories.
The sixth annual event is set to be the biggest yet, with new awards being offered and a few surprises promised.
Handy AV, an audio visual equipment supplier in Sidcup, won the 2017 Business of the Year award.
Founder Aubery Wright said: “We never expected to win Business of the Year, and it has been so beneficial to the company.”
The event is being organised by White Label, and managing director Katherine Glass said: “As businesses, we all have challenges to face in this day and age.
“These awards are a chance focus on the positives.
“They are also a chance to help your business grow, so I urge businesses to seize the moment and apply for an award.”
The deadline for award applications is March 16, and contestants will then be shortlisted on March 28.
Following this, there will be a chance to learn and share more information on the businesses, with an interview process beginning on May 4.
A gala dinner on June 27 will announce the winners, with a currently secret location planned for the event, which is promised to be bigger and more exciting than ever.
The list of awards includes:
1. The SME Excellence Award (Turnover of less than £15 million)
2. Business Commitment to Education and Skills
3. Best Employer of the Year
4. Best Marketing Campaign
5. Customer Service Award
6. Best Charity or Social Enterprise
7. Best New Start Up (trading less than 18 months)
8. Tech Innovation of the Year
9. Entrepreneur of the Year
10. Commitment to the Community
11. Independent Retailer of the Year
12. Made in Bexley (or Assembled)
13. Best Business for Hospitality and Food Excellence
14. Best Business for Excellence in Culture, Sport & Leisure
Businesses can enter up to three of the 14 different awards, and entry is free and easy to do online, by going to www.bexleyawards.co.uk.
Mayoress Irene Reader said: “It is eye-opening to see the number of businesses in the borough that we do not always know are out there.
“People should push themselves to apply for an award.”
Online supermarket Ocado will be headline sponsors for the third year running, and revealed some new plans of their own.
Speaking at the launch, manager Claire Salmon said: “We are a big company with a very local approach, and last three years of sponsoring this event has been really important to Ocado.”
Bexley Cllr Linda Barker added: “Tonight we have seen a great turn-out and a diverse mix of local companies.
“We like all kinds of different businesses to come forward, the awards have been growing every year and the business community in this borough is vibrant.”
