Bexley finished fifth at this year’s London Youth Games.

This was two places higher than 2012. All 33 London boroughs took part in the competition, and Bexley was represented in 51 different sporting events.

The competition stretched over 26 days and the finals were held at Crystal Palace last weekend (July 6 and 7). It was open to young people aged 18 and below.

There were a number of team successes, with ten sports finishing in a top three placing. Girls tag rugby won gold.

Bexley team managers Chris Jones and Ray Lang were over the moon with the team’s gold medal.

Mr Lang said: “We are incredibly proud of all the girls. They showed great commitment in attending training over a two month period and to win the gold against last year’s winners is an amazing achievement.”

Mr Jones added: “Thanks should go to Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School who allowed us to use their pitches for our training and preparation.”

Bexley won silver in angling, while canoe slalom and trampolining. sailing, boccia, female volleyball, male judo, indoor rowing and girls football all won bronze medals.

Cllr Don Massey, cabinet member for community safety and leisure, said: “Bexley’s young sports men and women have again done us proud representing the borough, they have excelled this year and coming fifth out of all 33 London Boroughs is such an incredible achievement”.
