Calls to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant were unanimously backed by Bexley Council in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

It would secure a greater degree of preference for servicemen and women and their families when they return to Bexley from national service.

The motion was tabled by Labour leader Cllr Chris Ball.

He said: “The timing of this motion so close to Remembrance Day makes it so apt. We owe such a huge debt to our military both past and present.

“By signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant we are doing our bit to support local heroes and their families.”

Cllr Ball had originally proposed in July that the council included provision in its housing allocation policy for armed forces staff.
