A happy couple welcomed the first boy to be born at Princess Royal University Hospital on New Year’s Day.

Parents Aaron Ladd, 28, of Plumstead, and Briony Whittington, 21, of Arcadian Avenue, Bexley, were joined by little Albie John Ladd at 1.44am at the hospital in Farnborough Common, Orpington.

While other people were heading home from New Year’s Eve parties, they were caring for the 8lbs 2oz boy – their first child – who had been due on January 10.

Aaron said: “We were hoping he would be the first baby, but there was a girl born 15 minutes before.

“We were trying to have a bit of a race to have the first born. The labour went very well.”

The couple had put their Christmas on hold and laid off making any New Year’s Eve plans.

Albie’s dad also thought it will be “quite good for him” to have a birthday on New Year’s Day in future.
