Bexley firefighters called to 851 false alarms in past year

Firefighters were called to 851 false alarms in Bexley last year- more than two a day- which cost £720,000.

Despite a reduction of 41 per cent in the past decade, false alarms are costing the UK £1bn per year.

Many are due to faulty or badly maintained automatic systems at commercial properties.

Bexley borough commander, Cyril O’Brien, said: “We can’t keep sending our crews out to non existent fires, particularly when a little extra care and attention from the owners or managers of buildings could solve this problem.

“This is about the Brigade being able to do the job people expect it to – attend real emergencies. The management of these alarm systems must improve so that our crews are not sent to needless call-outs.”
