Bexley MPs David Evennett and James Brokenshire were not among the Tory rebels who scuppered plans to reform the House of Lords.

The politicians, who represent Bexleyheath and Crayford and Old Bexley and Sidcup respectively, did not join 91 of their colleagues in going against the Government.

It is the biggest rebellion the coalition has faced since coming to power in 2010.

Mr Evennett said: “All MPs agree some form of reform is needed. I supported the motion because it’s crucial the Lords doesn’t supersede the supremacy of the Commons.”

Reforms have been put forward by Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and involve introducing an 80 per cent elected House of Lords and almost halving the number of members.
