Bexley schools announce closure plans

Five Bexley primary schools have announced they will be completely closed due to Thursday’s teacher strike.
Crook Log, Mayplace and Upland in Bexleyheath, Westbrooke in Welling and Days Lane in Sidcup will all be shut due to the walkout organised by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters’ Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) in a dispute with the government over pay, pensions and working conditions.
Other schools in Bexley will be partially closed. Academies are not obliged to tell the council of their plans but Bexley understands Trinity and St Augustine’s in Belvedere, Christ Church in Erith, St Catherine’s Catholic School for Girls in Bexleyheath and St Augustine’s will be open.
Bexleyheath Academy principal Carl Wakefield has already announced the school will be closing, and letters have been sent to parents and guardians.
He said: “I sincerely apologise for any disruption or consternation this may cause you as a family due to having to find alternative arrangements primarily relating to childcare.
“However, the decision was based on an assessment of our ability to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every child in our care.”
