Students are celebrating after reaching the final of a debate challenge.

Townley Grammar School pupils have made it through to the final of the English Speaking Union’s London Debate Challenge, which aims to give students the chance to develop skills in critical analysis and reasoning.

The team, which consisted of Thibiga Baskaran, Rebecca Hawkins, Suzie Page, Miranda Parkin and Danyelle Shobanjo, took part in a day full of challenging debates on June 16 and competed against schools from across Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich.

Only one school from each borough is allowed through to the final round and this was the first time that Townley Grammar School students took part in the competition.

The judges praised the team for their confidence and analytical skills, with positive comments including that the team was “one of the best they had seen across all of the heats.”

The final will be held at Senate House, University of London, on July 3.
