Bexleyheath collector to auction record haul

A record collector from Bexleyheath is to auction off his haul of every no.1 singles’ record since 1952.
Kevin Upchurch, 51, a retired post office clerk, started the collection because a friend accumulated every record that football club’s made when they reached cup finals and he wanted to do something similar.
He is hoping to get over £10,000 for his haul in an auction in Stockport on his 52nd birthday on Saturday (February 25).
Mr Upchurch said: “My first record was Can the Can by Suzi Quatro. I was still a teenager back then and very much into my music.
“Anything since 1973 I have bought the morning after the no.1 is announced. A few years ago I started downloading them and uploading them to my i-pod.
“The hardest offering was Lita Roza’s cover of ‘How Much Was That Doggy In The Window.’ I thought about giving up and years passed before I randomly on an internet site while looking for a completely different record.”
Mr Upchurch has spent thousands of pounds of accumlating his collection on vinyl, cassette, CDs and MP3.
On Sunday (February 26) the Bexley Record Fair will be holding another sale for buyers and sellers in Freemantle Hall on Bexley High Street.
Richard Day, organiser of the record fair, said: “It’s impossible to say how much the records will go for, especially as not all of them are on vinyl.
“Records from different labels have different values and different collectors have different ambitions.
“You’d have to sit down with the collection and go through it carefully record by record for a few days to determine its value.”
Mr Upchurch, who lives with his mother, is making the sacrifice to make more room in his flat.
“I’ve decided to sell up because of the room it takes up. My mum has recently fallen ill and I needed to move her into my flat.”
