A SUSPECTED burglar escaped when a prison van on its way to court was held up by an armed man.

A Serco van on its way to Woolwich Crown Court was forced to pull over when two men, wearing balaclavas, smashed the driver's window and threatened him with a gun on Monday morning.

Wayne Connor, 20, who had been charged with assault, racially aggravated assault and aggravated burglary, was driven away after the raid which happened a short distance from Feltham Young Offenders' Institution in west London. No shots were fired during the incident but the driver was treated for cuts and bruises.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "The driver of the van is believed to have been assaulted.

He was taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital and is in a stable condition."

A number of offenders who were also in the van were secured at the scene by police and another member of security staff was unhurt during the incident.
