TWO men have been jailed for a total of five years burgling a house in the early hours of the morning when the owner was asleep on the sofa.

Driver Stephen Connell, 24, of Hurst Road, Erith, was jailed for three years while his partner in crime, civil servant Nathan Reedman,19, of Swallow Close, Erith, was jailed for two.

The pair burgled the semi-detached house in Bexleyheath, by entering through a wooden porch and a UPVC porch, whilst the owner was asleep on the sofa.

They stole her handbag which was on the table in the hallway and contained cash, credit and debit cards, while she was asleep on the sofa in the living room.

She woke at 2am on December 15 last year to find the door slightly ajar and her bag missing. Her daughter who had been upstairs had not heard the break in.

The burglars were caught after a passer-by called police about two men acting suspiciously at the cash machines outside Sainsbury's Supermarket in Stadium Way, Crayford.

Connell and Reedman were arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods.

They were found in possession of nearly £1,000 in cash and a number of cards in the name of the victim of the burglary in Bexleyheath.

The pair appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on January 21 where they pleaded guilty to burglary before being remanded in custody. They were sentenced last Wednesday.

Trainee Detective Constable Mark McDonald said: "This pair of thieves broke in through a UPVC door that was not locked properly. It is important to get the message across to home owners who have these doors.

"They can be opened from the outside if they are not locked with the key from the inside. Simply lifting the handle does not completely secure the door. Remember; deadlock your door with the key - do not just lift the handle".
