A SPECIALIST care service for people struggling to look after a loved one with dementia opens this month.

A MindCare Centre, offering specialist services for people in Bromley and Bexley with dementia and their families, is to open at St Paul's Wood Centre, Chislehurst, next Thursday.

The centre, which will provide varied activities for those with Alzheimer's Disease or other conditions as well as providing respite for carers, is the fourth opened by Bromley Mind in the area.

Rose Hawkins turned to MindCare after caring for her sister Maisie on her own for three years. She said: "I wasn't sure at first because Maisie is a very quiet person. Two years down the line, Maisie loves her 'club'.

"The ladies at MindCare are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. I have two days every week to do whatever I like and just that little bit of freedom makes all the difference."

The centres are part of the MindCare Direct initiative launched by the charity's patron, Lord Nicholas Windsor, in 2007 and are open to council-funded clients as well as those who have direct payments or are self-funding.
