Changes to Bexley second home council tax

PUBLISHED: 12:50 01 February 2013 | UPDATED: 12:50 01 February 2013

From April some owners of empty or second homes in Bexley will no longer be exempt from council tax.

Bexley Council says the aim of the change is for people to bring their empty properties back into use.

Deputy council leader Cllr Colin Campbell said: “We are making a number of technical changes to our council tax this April and we want to be clear about how they will affect homeowners and why they are being made.

“This change is one of the simplest. Our aim is to encourage owners to bring empty and unused properties back into use and in doing so possibly help those without homes. If the properties are occupied and in use the changes will have no affect on houseowners.”

The government amended the rules on exemptions from council tax exemption last year giving greater discretion to individual councils.
