Valentine’s Day came early for one football-loving primary school teacher after her other half proposed during half-time at Charlton Athletic’s match against Birmingham City on Saturday.

Life-long Addicks supporter Terry Roffey, 31, from Bexleyheath, popped the question to his bride-to-be Nikki Donovan after a personal video message was beamed out from Charlton manager Chris Powell, who said: “Attention all Charlton fans. We have a special message for you now, especially a young lady called Nikki Donovan. Over to you Terry.”

Terry had told Nikki that they were going on to the pitch at half-time to do a raffle draw, but he got down on one knee after asking for her hand in marriage.

“I was so nervous that I didn’t sleep or eat all week,” he said.

“It was an awesome day. We’ve both supported Charlton since forever, so it seemed like a great place to do it.

“But we were so happy afterwards that we couldn’t watch the second half. We left and went and had champagne.”

The couple have even discussed having their wedding at the club.
