A 54-YEAR-OLD man who subjected a young girl to a nine-year campaign of sickening rape and abuse had his jail term slashed.

Nigel Kirwan, of Godstow Road, Thamesmead, who started molesting the girl when she was just 12-years-old, admitted nine counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault.

He was jailed for 14 years at Woolwich Crown Court last year, but on Tuesday three Appeal Court judges reduced that to

12 years, ruling that the original term was "manifestly excessive".

The court heard Kirwan first had sex with the girl when she was 13-years-old, but had begun abusing her a year earlier.

The attacks continued over a nine-year period and were only uncovered when the victim's mother found an explicit text message on her phone.

The victim, now in her 20s, said she hated Kirwan for what he had done to her and had cut herself a couple of times because of the emotional turmoil she was

suffering.

Mr Justice Jack, sitting with Lord Justice Elias and Judge David Radford, told the court: "The judge should have taken a starting point of 18 years,

reducing it to 12 after the plea of guilty.
