Council tax in Bexley to be reviewed

Council tax payers in Bexley who receive a 25 per cent reduction on their bill as single occupancy residents will soon be checked to make sure the reductions are correct.

The council is working in conjunction with Equifax, a credit reference agency, using the latest data matching technology, to confirm the discount for genuine claimants.

This will identify people who are claiming a discount on their council tax when they are not entitled to it.

Currently more than 31,000 residents claim the single person discount.

There may be cases where the council has not been informed about a change in household occupancy, which affects the reduction, or where a false claim has been made.

When incorrect claims are identified, the council will be ending the claims and seeking to reclaim the discount from an appropriate date.

Cllr Gareth Bacon, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services, said: “This is one of a number of initiatives we routinely undertake to ensure that only those entitled to council tax reductions are receiving them.

“Work such as this helps to make sure the local tax system is working fairly and that any money which should be for the public benefit is collected.

“If any of our residents think they are not paying the correct Council Tax, they should contact us for advice.”
