The first Crossrail train went along the Elizabeth line last night as engineers tested a section of the tracks, travelling from Abbey Wood to Connaught Tunnel.

The train entered the new tunnels at Plumstead portal and went under the Thames at the Connaught Tunnel, before returning to Abbey Wood station.

Crossrail has been dubbed Europe’s largest infrastructure project and will eventually go through stations including Whitechapel, Stratford, Maryland, Forest Gate, Ilford, Chadwell Heath and Romford on its way through central London and out to Reading and Heathrow.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “When it opens later this year, the Elizabeth line is going to transform travel across London and the South East, helping to improve the lives of millions of Londoners, stimulating much needed housing development across the capital and providing a huge boost to our economy.”

Rail minister Jo Johnson called Crossrail “one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK.”

The line will open in ten months.
