The tunnel which will dramatically shorten the time it takes from Abbey Wood to central London has reached the halfway mark.

Machines Sophia and Mary, weighing 1,000 tonnes, has broken through to Woolwich. Crossrail will open in 2018 and will trim 15 minutes of journeys to Bond Street and 40 minutes to Heathrow Airport.

Project manager Gus Scott said: “It’s great to know that we’re half way through our tunnelling in south-east London.”
