Tunnelling machine Sophia and Crossrail workers in Plumstead


The 1,000 tonne tunnelling machine which will help link the new Crossrail network from Abbey Wood to London has been unveiled.

Crossrail will start at Abbey Wood and go above ground until Plumstead, where the 100 metre Sophia will tunnel under the Thames to Canary Wharf. Work is due to begin in the next couple of months.
