AN innocent father was knifed to death after one of the killers wrongly accused him of stealing a gold chain.

Roofer Mark Evans, 44, from Bexley, was stabbed up to 39 times to the head and body in a 'frenzied' attack, on October 11 last year, on a walkway outside Timothy House, Kale Road, Thamesmead, at approximately 11.15pm.

Carl Wheal, 35 of Lensbury Way, Abbey Wood, his half-brother Gary Wheal, 27, of Timothy House, Kale Road, Thamesmead and Robert Randall, 24, of Holstein Way, Thamesmead, all deny murdering the father-of-two and stepfather to four.

The Old Bailey heard on Tuesday how the three suspects were all drinking with Mr Evans, at an 11th floor flat in Timothy House, when Randall demanded to know where the chain given to him by his dead father was, which police later discovered at Randall's home.

The trial continues.
