Prime Minister David Cameron plans to speak to Home Secretary Theresa May to get to the truth of an alleged police smear campaign against the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

In a Panorama documentary last month former undercover policeman Peter Francis claimed he was ordered to get “dirt” on the Lawrence family to derail their campaign for justice.

Stephen was killed in Eltham in April 1993 and Mrs May has said she could extend the remit of two existing inquiries into undercover officers’ behaviour.

But although a judge-led public inquiry would be extremely costly, Mr Cameron says he wants to find a better way for the Lawrence family to get to the truth.
