Reports from the Public and Commercial Services Union and The Mirror suggest the Avenue Road branch would be shutting
Reports by the Public and Commercial Services Union and The Mirror have suggested that Bexleyheath’s Jobcentre would be closing, but the Department of Work and Pensions has confirmed this is not the case.
The government stated on Wednesday, July 5, that it will be closing or merging a number of centres, which they claim will save over £140 million a year in money, however, the branch in Avenue Road, is not one of them.
The DWP claim they are closing some centres because eight out of twn people claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, and 99 per cent of application for Universal Credit are made online, meaning that the centres are used “much less”.
A spokesperson from the DWP, said: “This is not true, there will be no change with the Bexleyheath Jobcentre. We understand that the union put out a press release saying it would be closing, and that this was also reported by The Mirror, but this is wrong.
“The Jobcentre will not be leaving the town, and it will be staying exactly the same.”
