Unemployment figures in Bexley are slightly down on this time last year, according to figures released last week.

A total of 4,480 people claimed jobseeker’s allowance in the borough in the last three months of 2012, 342 fewer than in the same period of 2011.

That means 3 per cent of the people in the borough are on the dole, down 0.2 per cent from the end of 2011.

This is well below the national rate of people on jobseeker’s allowance, which stands at 7.7 per cent. According to the Office of National Statistics, who have collated the figures, of the 29.73 million people in the UK in work, 73 per cent of them were working full-time.

There are significantly more men in Bexley on the dole than women - 2,658 as opposed to 1,822 women.
