Lord Putman on his visit to Eltham College

The director of Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire returned to the school where the film’s hero attended.

Lord Puttnam was the guest of honour for a gala dinner at Eltham College in Grove Park Road, Eltham.

The hero of the 1981 film, Eric Liddell, attended Eltham College while his parents were missionaries in China and then went on to win the Olympic 400m Gold medal in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

Lord Puttnam’s visit on Monday (30) was exactly 100 years since the School for the Sons of Missionaries, including Eric Liddell, moved from “The Old Barn” in Blackheath village over the fields to Fairy Hall in Mottingham village and opened its doors as Eltham College.

Headmaster, Paul Henderson said: “We were delighted to welcome Lord Puttnam back to Eltham College and to celebrate the occasion with so many friends from within our community.”
