POLICE are urging residents to be vigilant when using cash machines after a number of distraction thefts.

There have been 25 incidents at the Broadway in Bexleyheath in the last 15 months and the majority of the victims have been elderly.

The criminals tend to work in pairs to distract the person using the cash point machine.

One of the thieves follows the victim to the machine and watches as they tap in their PIN before distracting them.

The second thief comes over from the other side as another distraction while the first one presses the cancel button and removes the card before making off.

With the PIN number and cash card, the thieves will use another machine to steal as much as £500.
