MORE than 1,500 aluminium doors have been stolen from concrete lamp posts in the last two months, costing the taxpayer £40,000.

Scrap metal thieves have targeted lamp columns in Bexleyheath, Welling and Sidcup, creating a possible risk to the public after leaving the wires exposed.

So far, Bexley council has spent £40,000 replacing the doors.

Transport councillor Peter Craske said: "This selfish crime is unbelievable. To leave lamp column wires exposed at a height where children can reach them is outrageous."

If you notice lamp columns with wires exposed report them to the council by calling 020 8303 7777 and press option one.
