Archant

This was the dramatic scene on the A20 yesterday (wed) as emergency services attended an accident after a lorry crashed in to a railway bridge over the busy road at Swanley, near Sidcup.

The driver, who is thought to be in his 40s, was taken to Darent Valley Hospital with minor injuries after being cut free by firefighters using hydraulic cutting equipment. Twelve firefighters from four crews attended the smash which happened at about 10am.

An air ambulance crew treated the lorry driver at the scene and he initially lost consciousness but later regained it. An ambulance spokesman said he was suffering from a head injury and bleeding from his mouth but was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

The A20 was closed at the junction with the M20 in both directions when debris from the laundry truck and its trailer stretched across both carriageways just after the Swanley interchange.

Barriers were repaired and the lorry was removed allowing both carriageways to fully reopen by 4pm yesterday, six hours after the smash.

The collision damaged rail tracks and services to Victoria were disrupted for a couple of hours.

During the raod closure coast-bound traffic was diverted up and over the carriageway via the entry and exit slip roads.
