DRINK driving in the borough has shot up by nearly 10 per cent.

DRINK driving in the borough has shot up by nearly 10 per cent.

Bexley is one of the six boroughs where drink driving is on the up, despite the rest of London having a 10 per cent decrease.

Last year 329 people were arrested for drink driving in Bexley, an annual increase of 30.

But the number of charges made actually decreased by two with 216 people being charged with the offence.

Policing Spokesperson for the London Assembly Liberal Democrats Dee Doocey said: "The fact that there has been a rise in positive breath tests in these boroughs is deeply concerning.

"I cannot believe that in this day and age people still think it is acceptable to drink and drive.

"We need to see more drink awareness projects and sensible drinking campaigns to tackle this worrying trend."

Bexley Police Inspector Tony Rodwell said: "We are pleased to see that the increased patrolling time that has been made available through the full roll out of Safer Neighbourhood wards has resulted in a small but significant increase in arrests for drink driving.
