Barnehurst ward councillor Eileen Pallen has been chosen as Bexley’s latest mayor, becoming the 77th person to hold the title of Mayor of Bexley.

The Middlesex born councillor moved to Barnehurst 25 years ago after marrying her husband Mark, the new mayor’s escort.

She was first elected to the council as councillor for Crayford ward in 2010, before being elected to her home ward in 2014.

Mrs Pallen , who works freelance for a company that conducts bullying and harassment investigations, will now be stepping down from her cabinet role in charge of adult social services.

With previous experience working with local libraries and voluntary organisations, the new mayor said: “It has been a privilege to work with the organisations, residents and officers, who support and look after our more vulnerable older residents, people with learning disabilities and people with physical disabilities.

“I have learnt so much these past two years and I known this will stand me in good stead throughout my ‘year’ as mayor.”

Her charities during her ‘year’ will be tackling loneliness in older people and also supporting ‘Alzheimer’s Bexley’.

Mrs Pallen has appointed councillor Val Clark to be her deputy Mayor and Val’s son, Jason Clark to be the deputy mayoress’ escort.
