An elderly man had to be rescued from a fire which damaged his home in Welling.

Fire crews found the man sitting halfway up the stairs on a stairlift after the fire broke out in a terraced house in Lewis Road on Saturday afternoon.

Crews helped him to safety, and he was subsequently taken to hospital in an ambulance, suffering from shock and smoke inhalation.

An elderly woman who had managed to get out before the brigade arrived was also taken to hospital.

Part of the ground floor of the house was damaged by the blaze, which broke out just before 5pm.

Some 21 firefighters from Plumstead, Eltham, Sidcup and East Greenwich were called to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
