Erith scrapyard fire destroys two cars and eight shipping containers

Two cars and eight shipping containers were destroyed in a blaze at an Erith scrapyard.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters were called to a fire at a car breakers and tyre workshop yard on Darent Industrial Park on Friday (November 23) at 11.07am.

They brought the fire under control by 1.48pm.

Crews from Erith, Bexley, Plumstead, Sidcup and Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

Erith station manager Lee Sparks said: “Crews remained on scene throughout the afternoon.

“The area was gridlocked with traffic so we asked motorists to try and avoid the area wherever possible, particularly Manor Way and the surrounding roads.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
