Strictly Come Dancing stars Pasha Kovalev and Katya Virshilas are helping to turn the buzz and excitement of the TV series into a new spectacular theatre show.
The pair will be performing at Fairfield Halls, Croydon, on Thursday (12), with four guest dancers, demonstrating a series of stunning dance routines.
Virshilas, though, is not surprised ballroom dancing is now being performed in a leading theatre, such as Fairfield Halls, rather than just on television.
“I think since Strictly hit the screens 11 years ago it appealed to the masses,” she says. “It made ballroom dancing look sexy and easy. Even if you were 90 or nine years old you can do it.
“Also the show shows true talent from professionals and showcases celebrities, who are actually learning a skill, which every Bob and Joe can relate to.”
The Lithuanian-Canadian says when she started ballroom dancing at 13, she was bullied by her peers.
“I was bullied for dancing and called names like “twinkle toes” now because of Strictly - and all the professionals on the show - ballroom dancing is cool, hot and sexy.”
Virshilas feels Strictly inspires kids to dance, when on tour local dance schools are invited to join the duo on stage to flaunt their own moves.
Explaining the concept, Virshilas says: “Each show we do we invite a young dance school to join us because it gives them a chance to preform in a professional setting with professional dancers. It inspires them to work harder to achieve their dream.”
Virshilas adds fans of the show will enjoy the “completely different experience” from watching it on TV.
“It is up close and personal with all the glamour of strictly,” she smiles. “We have all dances in our shows from ballroom to Argentine tango to hot cha cha’s.”
“An evening with stars from Strictly Come Dancing” starring Pasha Kovalev and Katya Virshilas on June 12 at Fairfield Halls, Croydon, at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at 0208 688 9291 or www.fairfield.co.uk
