The firefighters were called to Maypole Crescent, Erith, at about 6pm yesterday evening after reports of the fire at a scrap yard, containing vehicles and large quantities of scrap metal, and two adjacent car workshops.

About 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines from Greenwich, Bexley, Plumstead, Sidcup, Lee Green and Erith fire stations attended the scene.

The majority of the blaze was under control by 1am and firefighters have remained at the scene to dampen down pockets of fire.

Residents in the surrounding area were advised to keep doors and windows closed as smoke drifted from the large fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. There have been no reports of anyone being injured.
