Bexley firefighters cooked dinner for elderly residents at the station on Sunday.

Seven local residents and their drivers from Contact the Elderly attended and enjoyed a meal with all the trimmings.

They were also given important fire safety advice.

Bexley Borough Commander, Richard Welch, said: “I’m so proud of the firefighters for putting on this fantastic meal and for looking after our guests including the drivers who do so much in our community.

“By getting to know those most at need we can hopefully prevent them from having a fire at any time of the year.

“I’d urge everyone to make sure their elderly friends or family are well protected from fire and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

A third of people who died in accidental fires in London last year were receiving care services.

Firefighters across London are working hard to reduce the risk of those most vulnerable.

Previous research shows that vulnerable people are 18 times less likely to have a fire if they receive a home fire safety visit from firefighters.
