One Champions League, three Dutch and three Italian titles along with 74 international caps for the Netherlands – Edgar Davids has had an amazing football career.

But none of that will matter when he brings his Barnet team to Bexley on Saturday, especially as Welling sit five places and three points better off than their north London rivals.

Davids’ spell as player-coach at Barnet has not been without its controversies. Many people in the football world were surprised that he stayed at the club after they were relegated from League Two last season.

According to Macclesfield Town defender Tony Halls, Barnet players have to address him as “Mr Davids” on the pitch.

And Barnet’s owner, Tony Kleanthous, says Davids doesn’t mind travelling to away games just “not to the north”. He is also reported to have missed part of pre-season to go to a party at the Playboy Mansion.

As Welling is 27 miles slightly south-east of Barnet, there’s a good chance that Wings fans can catch a glimpse of the former Ajax, Juventus and Barcelona midfielder – spectacles and all.
