Volunteers from the Friends of the Shuttle group collected 41 bags of rubbish on Saturday
A litter clean-up event took place at Danson Park on Saturday.
Organised by the Friends of the Shuttle group, over 20 volunteers braved the rain and wind in Bexleyheath to collect litter that had polluted the picturesque park.
One volunteer, Jane Stout, said: “I half-expected nobody to turn up because the weather was so hideous, but the day went really well and we ended up having a real laugh.
“These are proactive people, they don’t sit around reading the paper saying ‘something needs to be done’ they’re actually getting out there and doing it.”
The litter-pickers were joined by members of the Meridian Canoe Club, who took their canoes out to collect rubbish from the boating area of the lake.
In total, 41 bags of rubbish were collected from in and around the lake over the four hours.
Supported by its parent charity, Thames 21, Friends of the Shuttle run regular litter picks and other conservation projects along the River Shuttle, as well as events twice a year in Danson Park.
The group also took on maintenance of the flower beds in the Old English Garden.
“It would have been a tragedy to see such a beautiful garden turfed over, so we took on that responsibility as well, we have a good relationship with the council,” Ms Stout added.
