Welling United’s FA Cup dream ended in tears as they crashed out of the competition following a 5-0 defeat against Carlisle United at Park View Road on Sunday.

Charlie Wyke scored a hat-trick for the visitors in a thumping loss that in truth really could have been even worse for the Wings.

Wyke opened the scoring on 18 minutes but Welling would have considered themselves well in the tie, before a freak goal just before half time that was credited to Anthony Sweeney seemed to destroy any burgeoning confidence.

Michael McEntegart then saved Danny Grainger’s penalty to give the hosts hope, but a second spot kick awarded shortly after saw defender Harry Osborne dismissed and Carlisle extend their lead to three as Grainger converted.

Strikes from Wyke in the 71st and 90th minute completed the rout.
