AN 88-YEAR-OLD great-grandmother loved by her community has been stabbed to death in her home.

The woman was found with multiple wounds at her flat in Valiant House, Sam Bartram Close, in Charlton at 9.40am on Saturday.

The victim was named by neighbours as Irene Barrett, a retired secretary who had lived in the tower block for nearly 28 years and was a pillar of the community.

Mother of two Claire Pickett, 30, who has lived on the seventh floor of the tower block for 10 years, said: "I just can't believe what's happened, I don't understand it.

"She was very caring, and always looked out for other people. She had a lot of friends.

"When my babies were born she knitted them both a blanket and bought them presents.

"When any of the older residents passed away Rene would organise a collection and get a card for everybody to sign. She was like that."

Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons, investigating, said: "This is a violent attack resulting in the death of an elderly lady in her own home.

"At this early stage we believe it is a burglary which has escalated into murder."

Police arrested a 32-year-old woman Sunday and a 34-year-old man on Saturday.

Both were taken to south London police stations where they remain in custody.
