A PHOTOGRAPHER has been named Archant's Environmentalist Of The Year by after her first 'proper' solo exhibition.

Anna Hillman, 33, from New Cross, was one of 14 winners at the Archant Environmental Awards last Friday following her Amazingness exhibition at the Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Peyton Place, Greenwich, last summer.

The five-week exhibition showcased Ms Hillman's photographs of nature conquering the urban environment, which were taken in the locally.

They included weeds rising from pavements and flowers growing out of mossy bollards.

Ms Hillman said it was brilliant winning the award adding: "I was really happy. I was quite surprised to win as I thought the judges wouldn't know that much about me but there is quite a lot of information on my website."

Workshops were an important part to the work and children were invited to go and take pictures of examples of nature conquering the urban environment, which were then used in the exhibition.

Ms Hillman said: "I think art does have an effect on how people think about the environment - that is the plan! I get a lot of really positive feedback. It does make them more aware of things. Being aware of our own environment is really important in being in touch with the whole environment."

The Ravensbourne School, Hayes Lane, Bromley, was highly commended in the Best Environmental (Secondary) School for their numerous projects which the judges felt showed a great sense of teamwork and spirit.

Other Kent green winners included Environmental Business of the Year Award (+200) which went construction contractor FM Conway Limited, based in Conway House, Rochester Way, Dartford.

They are the market leader in recycling and they ensure all their operations have 'green' thinking built into them making the company fully focused on building a sustainable environment for the future.
