A HEADTEACHER was invited to a reception at Downing Street held by the Prime Minister to celebrate successful leadership at his school.

John Atkins, Headmaster of Kemnal Technology College in Sevenoaks Way, Sidcup, had a two-hour meeting with Gordon Brown as part of the National Leaders of Education scheme which provides support for struggling schools.

It was Mr Atkins's third visit to Downing Street, although this was the first time he got to shake the Prime Minister's hand.

He said: "It was quite a privilge to be invited. We had a little chat about Kemnal and what we're doing there. He was very warm and personable."

Mr Atkins also met Mr Brown's wife Sara, Secretary for Schools, Ed Balls and Minister for Schools, Jim Knight.
