Caravans and a bungalow damaged by blaze at travellers’ site

Dozens of firefighters were called to Abbey Wood yesterday after a huge fire broke out on a travellers’ site.

Some 35 firefighters were called to Thistlebrook at 3.15pm after receiving 22 calls about the fire, which could be seen for miles.

Two static caravans were badly damaged and a bungalow was also damaged by the heat. Crews had to cool down gas cylinders which were at risk of exploding.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and crews left just after 5pm.

Station manager Winston Douglas, who was at the scene. said: “People had evacuated the area before we arrived. We also led a horse to safety.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
