Fire crews were in Dayton Drive for more than three hours

A huge area of grass in Erith the size of four football pitches was destroyed by fire on Saturday.

Some 35 firefighters and officers were called to Dayton Drive at 2.45pm, but could not prevent the flames destroying the embankment.

Station manager Gary Thompson, who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters worked in arduous hot conditions to put the fire out and limit damage.

“It is vital, during these warm, dry days, not to throw lit cigarettes onto open grassland.”

Crews did not leave the scene until almost 6pm.
