The development company is being created to boost council funding

Plans to create a council-owned development company to fund growth in the borough took a step forward on Monday night as cabinet members interviewed the final three candidates for its first managing director.

Branded BexleyCo, the development firm would initially be supported by council loans and external funding, but councillors remain hopeful it could become a £1million-profit company by 2023.

Heading up the company for up to 18 months, the part-time MD will work either three or four days a week to get the company off the ground as the council looks to create a sustainable source of income with the gradual loss of government support grants by 2020.

Cabinet member Don Massey said: “We’re really happy with the standard of all three candidates, once hired they will be able to look through exisiting plans for the company and make their own judgements on what will best forward as we get the company off the ground.”

A decision is expected by the end of the week.
