A stoppage-time winner from Jake Gallagher saw Welling United go two points clear at the top of the Conference South on Saturday (2).

The Wings welcomed mid-table Maidenhead United to Park View Road and twice had to come from behind to win 3-2.

The visitors took the lead on the stroke of half-time through a neat finish from Gary Pratt, but Welling struck back 10 minutes into the second half thanks to a towering header from defender Ben Martin.

Harry Pritchard scored after 66 minutes as Maidenhead retook the lead but the home side were not to be denied.

Lee Clarke headed in a free-kick from Jack Obersteller and as time was running out, Gallagher fired home following a scramble in the penalty area to the delight of the home fans.

Welling’s cause was helped by title rivals Salisbury only drawing at home to Weston-super-Mare and the Wiltshire side also had one point deducted last week for fielding an ineligible player in a match in January.

Salisbury had a chance to reclaim top spot with a game against Basingstoke on Tuesday night (5). Welling are next in action against the same opposition on Saturday (9).
