A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after the memorial of Stephen Lawrence was vandalised.

The plaque in Well Hall Road, Eltham, which lies at the spot where the architecture student was killed by a racist gang in 1993, was vandalised at about 12.30am on Monday morning.

A liquid substance was poured on to the plaque but police refuse to confirm if it was petrol. Officers cordoned off the road and carried out forensic tests.

The suspect has been bailed to return to an unspecified date in September.
