Local resident Joy Toghill was nominated to open the new Asda store in Belvedere on Monday (August 5).
Joy, who cut the ribbon with new supermarket manager Chris Good, has worked with young people in the borough for almost 40 years. The store, in Station Road, is bringing 300 new jobs to the area.
Joy’s dedication to working with young people is as important to her now as when she first started, working on average 50 hours per week with no sign that this will be slowing down in the near future.
Her nomination stood out to Asda colleagues who voted to name her local hero and invite her to officially open the store and receive the £200 prize.
Chris Good said: “Thank you to everyone who nominated a local hero. We had some strong entries and Joy stood out for her tireless work ethic in supporting the future of the community. As its newest member, we hope to follow in Joy’s footsteps thanks to our community life commitment and the appointment of Zoe, our community champion.
“We have started to meet with many of our new neighbours and I can’t wait until we open our doors for the first time on Monday, when I hope to meet many more. It’s a huge honour to be able to bring 300 new jobs to the area and we are committed to offering great customer service and being an active member of our new community.”
