A BUILDER who battered a love rival over the head with a metal bar during a long-running feud has been spared jail.

Colin Vallom, 49, of Ridgeway Cliff, Herne Bay, launched the attack after victim Patrick French threw a trowel at him while he fixed a flat tyre in the street.

Mr French was knocked unconscious and took three months to recover from the effects of the assault outside his home in Axminster Crescent, Welling.

Woolwich Crown Court heard they had been best friends until Vallom started going out with the victim's ex-wife.

In interview he admitted hitting the victim twice but claimed he had been hit on the back of the head by the trowel.

Mr French, 48, suffered cuts to his head and swelling around the face and was only fully discharged from hospital on October 16.

Vallom was at first charged with unlawful wounding but pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Vallom was jailed for eight months suspended for two years last Wednesday.

He will have to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and pay £500 compensation to Patrick French.
