A MAN has pleaded not guilty to arson after a fire at a town hall.

Three fire engines attended a blaze last Monday night in a basement office at Erith Town Hall, which houses Bexley council's Housing Benefits and Council Tax Services.

Kevin Whale, 52, of Creekside, Deptford, was charged with arson and pleaded not guilty at Bexley Magistrates Court last Wednesday.

The fire damaged some council files but nobody was hurt in the blaze.

Bexley council said no disruption to their services will arise as all the data is held electronically.

After an assessment the building was open as normal the following day.

Mr Whale is being remanded in custody at Belmarsh prison, in Thamesmead and will next appear at Bexley Magistrate's Court on May 20.
